WithRespect

What is it?

WithRespect case management program at Queerspace supports LGBTIQA+ people who are experiencing family violence in Victoria.

WithRespect provides brief, intermediate and intensive support to address the risk, safety and recovery needs of all family members, including children and young people.

LGBTIQA+ people may face several barriers to accessing support services and may be less likely to report their experiences to authorities or seek help. This can be because of previous experiences accessing services or lived experience mis-identification, discrimination, and systems harm. It can also occur due to fear of isolation from community.

Recognising the signs of family violence

Family violence refers to actions by an intimate partner or family member that cause you to experience fear or a loss of power and control in the relationship. LGBTIQA+ people experience similar rates of family violence to the rest of the community, however some of the signs of family violence from intimate partners and family members may differ. Examples can include:

  • Misgendering and deadnaming you to friends and family
  • Revealing or threatening to reveal your identity
  • Revealing or threatening to reveal your HIV status
  • Rejection or abuse after coming out
  • Restricting access to gender affirming care
  • Threatening to limit access to children
  • Isolating you from support
